4.07 Sampathy

சம்பாதி

The Vanaras accompanying Hanuman went to the south in search of Sita, but could not find her. Frustrated Angatha said, “We cannot return without finding Sita. So we will die here without taking any food. The Eagle Jatayu helped Rama by sacrificing his life by fighting with Ravana. So we will also sacrifice our lives”.

Sampathy, the elder brother of Jatayu was living in that cave and he heard the Vanaras talking about Jatayu. Sampathy and Jatayu once flew near the Sun and the heat became unbearable. Sampathy being elder, covered Jatayu with his wings and protected him. In the process, Sampathy’s wings were burnt and it fell down in this cave. After that he did not hear anything about Jatayu. When the Vanaras were talking about Jatayu, Sampathy came down and talked to the Vanaras and learnt their story. He offered to help them as he had very long vision.

Sampathy said, “I am able to see Sita imprisoned by Ravana in Lanka across the ocean. You cross the sea and find Sita there.

இஹஸ்தோஹம் ப்ரபஸ்யாமி ராவணம் ஜானகீம் ததா

அஸ்மாகமபி ஸௌபர்ணம் திவ்யம் சக்ஷுர்பலம் ததா

(Valmiki Ramayanam, Kishkinda Kandam, 58-30)

Sampathy told the Vanaras, “It is very difficult to cross the ocean. One of you can go secretly there and search for Sita. Otherwise give message to Rama that Sita is in Lanka across the ocean”.

எல்லீரும் சேறல் என்பது எளிதன்று அவ்விலங்கை மூதுர்

வல்லீரேல் ஒருவர் ஏகி மறைந்து அவண் ஒழுகி வாய்மை

சொல்லீரேல் துயரை நீக்கித் தோகையைத் தெருட்டி மீள்தீர்

அல்லீரேல் என் சொல் தேறி உணர்துமின் அழகற்கு அம்மா

When Sampathy helped the Vanaras in Rama Karyam, his burnt wings started growing and he happily flew away.
